Project Overview
SUMMARY
This project was part of part of a classroom interaction design course. The approach to start this course was a bit different. Rather than selecting or choosing a problem area or area of work interest, I had to get inspired by Constellations. The work process started by choosing a constellation and by studying conclude what fascinates me. Further this fascination led me to a vision statement, context and scenario. With this research I was able to establish an intent to solve a specific problem area.
I have presented the high level approach for this project below. I can talk about the research that led me to the intent in detail during face to face conversation.

My Approach
Contextual Inquiry
Research and interaction with children and their parents have highlighted the key reasons of fear and dislike towards the subject of Mathematics.
PSYCHOLOGY
It may be deficiency in the underlying cognitive process. Bringing up the topic of math to a group of adults you would hear groans. But they understand the importance in real life. It is essential to acknowledge the neuro-developmental demands that math places in student. Stems from lack of understanding. Each student requires different approach to teaching.
REASONS FOR DISLIKE
Its not as interactive and hands on as other subjects. It requires to think and forces to give correct and exact value. Children don’t believe it relates to real life. Cannot memorize but has to be solved. Difficulty in understanding the logic. Lack of practice so, interest cannot be developed.
Many of cannot understand the subject. Difficult to understand logic. Difficulty remembering. Frustrating but useful. Challenging.
METHODS & TOOLS TO TEACH
Individually by parents, elder at home. In groups in schools & classrooms. Parents sit beside the child and teach them personally. Taught with help of textbooks, workbooks, computer.

DESIGN STATEMENT
I want children to develop interest, reduce hatred & fear, enjoy & experience the fun side of mathematics using puzzles and stories.

SOLUTION
This is a game that consists of board games, cubes and visual stories.
The board will be of the size of the class room. Teams would start from the starting point of the board.
Then throws both dice. One with the mathematical signs and the other normal one.
Then the team will be shown a story, of which the teams have to find the answer.
For solving the story the teams can take help of the blocks, beads etc. provided by the game conductor. These materials will help them count the numbers in the story.
The story will be based on the sign on the dice. If the team gets correct answer, the team can move ahead number of houses as on the dice.
The board has some fillers in between. Like add 5 to the house or multiply 3 to the number on the dice.
The team who will reach the end will be the winner. The complexity can be increased by increasing the complexity in the story.
This game can be played individually as well as in teams.
